EU’s presence in the South China Sea - Current situation and prospects

Abstract: The paper outlines the practical benefits that motivate EU to participate in the South China Sea (called East Sea by Vietnam) issue, thereby analyzing the current situation of involvement in this hot spot of the European Union. In addition, the prospect of EU’s further participation in the South China Sea disputes is also fully evaluated. The results show that, with the economic dependence on China of many member states, the EU will have difficulty in expressing a stronger position on the South China Sea issue as a unified voice. However, in the context of the free and open Indo-Pacific, the US’s increasing demand for allies to show their role and responsibility for regional and international issues will be the driving force for European countries to be actively involved in the South China Sea situation. The key countries of the EU in particular and Europe in general: the UK, France and Germany, have confirmed this trend with decisive actions.
